Overview
About Your Course
This course is hugely popular with professionals and with recent graduates entering public relations. The course is developed by the CIPR and offers you a thorough grounding in public relations theory and practice, making it the ideal springboard to professional advancement and to further specialist study. Students, who are mainly (but not exclusively) working in public relations or a related occupation, attend several sessions, with options to begin in Autumn or in Spring.

This course gives you a solid grounding in all the key concepts, techniques and skills needed to develop effectively as a PR practitioner. It is a qualification in its own right, but also prepares you for the CIPR Diploma. You will gain from being taught by Europe's largest PR teaching team, and enjoy access to the full range of specialist resources such as online journals and library access.
Benefits of studying this course
Leeds Metropolitan enjoys an international reputation as a leading centre for public relations education. Professor Anne Gregory was the UK's first professor of public relations, while Professor Ralph Tench and subject leader Liz Yeomans edited what is now one of the world's best-recognised and popular textbooks on the subject. Paul Elmer is the only public relations tutor who is also a National Teaching Fellow. All staff are experts in their own right, offering students an opportunity to be taught by the best of the best, and our links with industry, regionally, nationally and internationally, mean that the qualities of our successful students are recognised everywhere.

Staff teaching on the course include Course Leader Paul Elmer, a former government practitioner with wide-ranging consultancy experience at home and abroad. For much of his career, Paul combined demanding jobs with part-time study, so he is especially attuned to the needs of working students. He holds a National Teaching Fellowship for the way he combines public relations practice and learning.

Teaching & Learning
Teaching is carried out in four two day block courses (Thursdays and Fridays) in Leeds on campus, covering the core course content. In addition, this course is unique in UK CIPR delivery in its use of current learning technologies. In addition to teaching sessions, a dedicated web space will allow study through an online learning environment. You will also have access to course-related audio and video podcasts.
Your Future
Future Career
Most students are already working in public relations or communications and it is relatively common for students to gain promotion or advancement either during the course or shortly after completing it. Work, or work placement, is not a formal requirement, but the networks available to students do allow individuals to arrange informal work experience, or simply to shadow each other to gain experience across the sector. The course is the perfect springboard to the CIPR Diploma programme, and to the specialist MSc programme that is offered by our University.
