About Your Course
This course takes in an in-depth look at public relations as an integral part of successful business practice. The Diploma provides public relations practitioners with an understanding of the strategic roles and functions of PR. You will learn the practice of public relations as a management function and acquire strategic theories, tools and techniques to improve your PR decision-making and effectiveness. You will also critically analyse the role of public relations within different organisations.

You will be taught by Europe's largest public relations teaching department and enjoy access to the full range of specialist resources such as online journals and library access. Leeds Metropolitan enjoys an international reputation as a leading centre for public relations education. Our academics have substantial professional experience in public relations. The late Alan Rawel, who was Head of Education at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), described us as 'one of the leading university PR departments in Europe'. The best selling textbook 'Exploring Public Relations' is edited by Prof Ralph Tench & Liz Yeomans (our previous and present subject group leaders) with chapters written by members of our subject group. It is now in its second edition and has been adopted as a standard text by many universities all over the world as well as by the CIPR Diploma.

Successful Alumni
Simon Collister is Head of Non-Profit and Public Sector at the specialist social media agency, We Are Social. He is a member of the CIPR Advisory Panel on New Media and non-executive director with the Open Rights Group. He was previously Head of Digital at global PR agencies, Weber Shandwick and Edelman.

Core modules include:
PR Planning and Management (Vocational Skillls)
This module develops the ability to explain, critique and apply a range of theories and practices to strategic public relations planning and management, considering publics, messages, media, research and evaluation.
PR Theory and Practice (Professional Knowledge)
This module develops the ability to analyse and critique a range of public relations concepts, models and theories and to apply them to public relations practice.
Personal Skills and Development (Reflective Practice)
This module supports students conducting a self-directed research project into an aspect of public relations practice and/or theory, reviewing and critiquing appropriate literature and using primary and secondary research methods.

Programme Specification
Assessment
The course consists of nine days' teaching in 4 blocks of 2 days plus a final day on the research project. In addition to the taught sessions, students would be expected to spend approximately 400 hours on independent study. Assessment consists of essays, a planning assignment and a research project.
Teaching & Learning
This course is unique in UK CIPR delivery in its use of current learning technologies. In addition to teaching sessions, a dedicated web space will allow study through an online learning environment. You will also have access to course-related audio and video podcasts.

UK & EU Fees Entry 2012

The fee shown here is the 'gross' fee for new students starting in the 2012/13 academic year, before the application of any scholarship or discount. A scholarship of £1,500 is available to new full-time students studying an MA, MSC or MBA (180 credits) who are eligible to pay Home/EU fees. For students studying for an award such as a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), or part-time, a pro rata scholarship is available.
