About Your Course
This course provides a profound understanding of the complex political, economic, cultural and technological changes that influence decisions and action about peace, conflict and development. You will have the opportunity to develop a critical awareness of the relationships between peace, conflict resolution and development, both locally and internationally, in order to inform ethical practice.
The reality of development work is that it often takes place in the context of existing or previous conflict where economic and social development are bound up in the process of post-conflict resolution, peace-building and reconciliation.
Pressures associated with climate change, resource depletion, explosive war remnants, increasing global migration, and economic and political crises mean that the issues associated with conflict and development become ever more important. This course will provide you with the tools to address these key challenges in a reflective and sensitive manner so you are equipped to make a positive difference.
January entrants please note: in order to complete 12 months of academic study delivered in University term time, the total length of your programme will be 18 months to include recognised University vacation periods.

Critical Perspectives on Peace & War
This provides an introduction to the core theories of war, peace and conflict reconstruction and an analysis of the major drivers, key theorists and practitioners.
Development Management
Introduces key policy debates including governance, decentralisation and the role of civil society, and examines new ways of delivering development in partnerships between governments, donors and civil society.
Post-conflict Reconstruction & Peace Building
Critically examines and integrates peace and development discourses around post-conflict reconstruction and considers recovery from major disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
State versus Human Security Paradigms
Deconstructs the truth content of contrasting and often contradictory models of key security issues from the competing state power and human security perspectives.
Working as a Global Citizen
This module will help you to understand, in practical terms, the impact of globalisation on working life and enable you to develop skills that are relevant to working life and political activism. You will also tackle relevant ethical challenges common in working life.
Individual Project
Allows you to apply your learning to an in-depth investigation of a research question of your choice. This might be related to interests you develop during the course or to a topic related to your existing work or career aspirations. You will be supervised by an experienced member of staff who is also an active researcher, and produce a 12-15000 word thesis.
Investigative Methods
This develops your ability to design suitable research questions, match them to appropriate research methods and apply these in a reflective and ethical way.
Perspectives on Development
This module critically examines the conceptual framework of international development in a global context, introducing a variety of different perspectives. You will become familiar with 'development orthodoxy' and critiques of it.Other modules linked to this course may include:

A mix of assessment techniques are used to provide you with continuous feedback to help you develop your skills and understanding, and to prepare you to work effectively in a variety of different organisational, social and political settings.

Teaching & Learning
This course is taught through daytime delivery and is spread over two semesters. It provides both teacher and student-led activity. The emphasis will be on teaching methods such as, supported/facilitated student discussions, guided independent reading and study, and supported critical reflection. Students will be expected to engage in face-to-face and/or online discussions, give presentations, and write reports and academic essays.
The course uses X-stream, the University's virtual learning environment which provides lecture slides, discussion notes, essential reading and other information, as well as more interactive tools such as discussion forums.

UK & EU Fees Entry 2013/14

The tuition fee for the year for students entering in 2013/14 is £4500. The amount you will pay may increase each year to take into account the effects of inflation. See further information on financing your studies.
Part-time
Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to learn at your own pace. Because of this, our tuition fees are calculated using credit points. Each module you study has a credit point value. Most taught postgraduate modules have a credit point value of 20.
The tuition fee for students entering in in 2013/14 on this course is £500 for each 20 credit point module.
For modules with a different credit point value their cost can be calculated by multiplying the credit value of the module by the cost per credit point of £25. The amount you will pay may increase each year in line with inflation.

The total cost of a Part-time course is determined by the number of modules you take in an academic year. Modules are made up of credit-points, and Part-time fees are typically quoted as fee-per-credit-point.
To calculate the typical cost of study: Fee-per-credit-point (e.g £63.88) x credit-points per module (e.g 20) = module cost of £1,277.60. If you study 4 modules in a year the cost would be £5,110.40 for that year.

or joining a dedicated top-up course are not eligible for this scholarship.
Students studying a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma are eligible for a pro rata scholarship of £500 and £1000 respectively.
10% Discount for graduates
Graduates of Leeds Metropolitan University and partner colleges within the Regional University Network (RUN), qualify for a 10% discount on postgraduate tuition fees if they have graduated within the last five years.
